May peace be on you After visits to shanty dwellings as a Red Cross worker Mrs. Mashmoon Lye felt that she should do  something to reduce the misery around us. She discussed the possibility of collecting “a Rupee a day” from  members of the community. The elders gave her all the encouragement and then was inaugurated the  A.C.M.A. RUPEE FUND by Dr. M.C.M. Kaleel then Minister of Labour and Social Services in 1953. Besides  Mr. B. Zahiere Lye, who was elected President several others notably Dr. A.R. Deane, M.C.S. Mohamed,  T.Z.R. Assen, Z.D. Musafer, Dr. M.P. Drahaman, S.I. Azeez, T.M.F. Dole, T.J. Bahar, S.B. Badurdeen, T.M.Z. Raheem, A.W. Musafer, T.B.A. Sinnen, T.E. Sookoor, B.N. Dole, H.C. Mantara, T.S. Jaldin, Jainoor Ahamat, T.H.B. Saldin, M.D. Kitchilan, S.A. Pakeer, M.H. Sourjah, M.T. Jaimon, T.K.Y. Allang, S.A. Mahil, T.K.  Jainudeen, T.M. Doole, D. Rahim, D.D. Saldin, M.K.X. Sabar, M.M. Jayah, M.Z.A. Sallay, A.A. Musafer,  A.J.S. Mohamed, M.H. Abdeen, T.Mohamed, H.N. Jainudeen, M.N. Lye, T.S. Saldin, T.J. Dole, Mesdames  Kathijah Deane, Rowena Ahlip, Gunara Dole, Mrs. Z.D. Musafer, Mrs. T.S. Jaldin, Doreen Samahin,  Chasnyn Lye and Mrs. Mashmoon Lye were present. Three decades and seven years later i.e. in 1990, the elder statesman Al-Haj Desamanya Dr. M.S.M.  Kaleel, at a special meeting of the SLMA Rupee Fund vividly recalled, “I remember sometime in 1953 when  both Zahiere Lye and Mashmoon Lye visited me to say they were establishing a social service Fund and  will be happy if I agreed to inaugurate it”. “They explained their objectives and I was extremely happy that here were two friends of mine who had  decided in earnest to be of service to the poor. The Fund they said was to be named the “RUPEE FUND”. It  was an idea to collect a rupee-a-day by each member of the Association. I saw in the idea that with a  humble beginning, they will make it grow to be in the forefront of social service. I readily agreed”.
